Best Time to Visit the Chambal Boat Safari in Kota
The short answer: the Chambal boat safari runs from October to June, and the sweet spot is the cool, clear stretch from November to February. But the "best" time really depends on what you want — birds, comfortable weather, or dramatic light. Here's how the year breaks down.
October to June: the safari season
This is when cruises operate. The river is calm, the gorge is at its most photogenic, and crocodiles and gharials bask on the banks. Within this window, conditions shift month to month.
November – February (peak)
Cool, pleasant days and excellent visibility. This is also peak bird season: migratory waterfowl and raptors join the residents, so birders see the longest species lists. Mornings can be crisp, so carry a light jacket for the early slot.
March – April (shoulder)
Warmer but still very comfortable on the water, with reptiles increasingly active and basking through the day. Fewer crowds than the winter peak.
May – June (hot)
Hot afternoons, so the early-morning cruise is strongly preferred. Wildlife concentrates near the water, which can make for excellent sightings — just bring sun protection and water.
July to September: monsoon pause
During the monsoon the catchment fills and dams release water, which raises levels and currents. Boat safaris typically pause in this period, and any operation depends entirely on conditions. If you're planning a monsoon trip to Kota, treat the boat safari as a maybe and keep city sights as a backup.
Because the Chambal is dam-fed, water levels can change quickly. We always confirm the day's timing and conditions with you on WhatsApp before your cruise.
Best time of day
Aim for the first morning departure or the late-afternoon / golden-hour slot. Light is soft and warm, the gorge walls glow, and wildlife is most active at the cooler ends of the day. Midday cruises are fine in winter but harsh in summer.
