The Complete Guide to the Chambal Boat Safari in Kota (2026)
The Chambal is one of India's last clean, free-flowing rivers — and near Kota it carves a dramatic gorge through the Hadoti plateau. A Chambal boat safari takes you right onto that water, between sheer cliffs, past basking crocodiles and rare gharials, under skies full of raptors and migratory birds. This guide covers everything you need to plan the trip.
What is the Chambal boat safari?
It's a guided motorboat ride through the Chambal river gorge near Kota, inside the protected Jawahar Sagar Sanctuary landscape. Unlike a typical jeep safari, you glide silently along the water, which lets you get remarkably close to wildlife resting on the banks and rocks. The scenery alone — vertical limestone walls rising straight out of calm green water — makes it one of the most underrated experiences in Rajasthan.
The two routes
There are two boat-safari routes to choose from, both run with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 guests per boat:
1. Chambal Garden → Garadia Mahadev
An 18 km, roughly 2-hour cruise that starts from Chambal Garden in Kota and heads toward the famous Garadia Mahadev gorge. Expect crocodiles, plenty of birdlife and the classic Kota canyon walls.
2. Jawahar Sagar → Jhawar Island
A longer 24 km, ~2.5-hour route from the Jawahar Sagar stretch out to Jhawar Island. This is the wilder run — alongside crocodiles and otters, the gorge slopes here are home to panther and sloth bear, with raptors, owls and vultures overhead.

What you'll see
The Chambal is a stronghold for the mugger crocodile and the critically endangered, fish-eating gharial, often seen basking together on sandbanks. Smooth-coated otters work the shallows, and over 300 resident and migratory bird species pass through — kingfishers, eagles, vultures, owls and winter waterfowl. On the Jawahar Sagar route, keep an eye on the slopes for panther and sloth bear. (Read more in our guide to Chambal river wildlife.)
Best time to go
Cruises run best from October to June; the monsoon (July–September) and high-water dam releases can pause operations. Early morning and late afternoon give the softest light and the most wildlife activity. We break this down fully in when to visit the Chambal safari.
What to carry
- Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses — there's little shade on the water
- Water and a light snack
- Binoculars and a zoom camera for wildlife
- A light jacket on winter mornings
Life jackets and an experienced local boatman come with every boat.
